On October 13th from 10:00 to 11:00h (CET), we will host a webinar on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and public services. AI is everywhere, impacting not only our private lives, but also our jobs. When using AI in public services, risks and challenges are even more prevalent considering how careful we need to be with for instance personal data of our citizens. The EU AI Act opts for AI literacy among civil servants. But is that enough to reduce risks? Join us in this webinar where Cecília Barreto de Almeida will share her insights about the (possible) impact of AI on public administration and its workers.

Programme

Excitment about AI varies greatly. Some people are more enthusiastic and look for how it can optimize their work, while others are more afraid about the risks and challenges. When government agencies implement AI in public administration, the stakes are even higher because the work of civil servants also involves dealing with public values and personal data.

Therefore, bringing AI into public services requires understanding of this technology. The importance of this understanding is emphasized in the EU AI Act. This act, amongst other rules and regulations, calls for AI Literacy. However, is AI literacy enough to support civil servants to navigate the new challenges and value conflicts that arise in their jobs? In this webinar Cecília Barreto de Almeida will share her insights and address some of the key issues and questions.

About Cecilia

Cecília Barreto de Almeida is a socio-legal researcher and lecturer working at the intersection of law, public policy, and digital governance. Her work combines legal analysis with empirical research.

Cecília: “In my postdoctoral research at Radboud University, I focus on public values in the digitalisation processes within government. The project examines value alignment and misalignment between Artificial Intelligence systems, organisational goals, and employees’ values in the workplace.”

Her PhD research (“Inequality and Inclusion in Online Public Services: Digital Government Policies and Digital Divides in Brazil and the Netherlands”), conducted at the University of São Paulo and the University of Groningen, analyses how governments’ digital transformation strategies create, reproduce, or remove barriers to access public services for people in vulnerable situations. Using comparative case studies in Brazil and the Netherlands, she combined document analysis, UX research, and qualitative interviews to understand how two different governments shaped their policies to address digital divides.
